S.Michele Square

S.Michele Square
The use of Lucca also call it "Piazza delle chains," because of numerous weighty marble columns connected by metal chains, but in fact takes its name from 'imposing church that is dedicated to St. Michael. Its foundation seems to date back to the eighth century, when attached to it stood a hospital and a monastery. In 1070 its renovation is documented by Pope Alexander II, whose works were continued until the fourteenth century.
