Vagli - The town the submerged by the lake

Vagli - The town the submerged by the lake
in 1947 , the damming of the River Edron , carried out by the SELT Valdarno , today ENEL , to produce electricity , has formed the artificial lake of Screeners, Screeners Under in the municipality of the province of Lucca. In 1948 the dam brought the waters to rise up to 92 meters , submerging some countries, including factories Careggine , small medieval village mainly inhabited by blacksmiths Brescia , which under the domination of the Este , became one of the largest suppliers of iron in Italy and enjoyed a period of prosperity thanks to the exploitation of marble from the local mountains and Vandelli , built by Duke Francesco III to connect and allow commercial traffic between Modena and Massa.

The village resurfaces and you can visit whenever the lake is drained , which is not very frequent ... This extraordinary event has occurred only four times : in 1958 , in 1974 , in 1983 and 1994.
In fact, the lake contains 34 million cubic meters of water is emptied and only in exceptional cases, for maintenance .
During the evacuation , ghost village remains out of the water for several weeks , and is therefore open to visitors. When this happens, many tourists flock to visit the stone houses , almost all without roofs , with very low inputs , through the narrow streets covered by a blanket of mud. There is still the bell tower intact , the church of St. Theodore . You really feel like you're on the lake bottom .

Due to the great call of the ghost town , is studying an ambitious project that aims to make a rope bridge suspended over the lake and a protective dome of glass to make visible permanently submerged village , also carried perhaps , in this way, Factories Careggine will lose part of its charm.
